Terence Carter is an editorial food and travel photographer and infrequent travel writer with a love of photographing people, places and plates of food. After living in the Middle East for a dozen years, he settled in South-East Asia a dozen years ago with his wife, travel and food writer and sometime magazine editor Lara Dunston.
While running the design department at one of Australia’s largest publishing companies (and playing in his post-punk band around Sydney’s pubs at night), Terence studied film, photography and multimedia at Sydney’s University of Technology (UTS). Later, during his time in the Middle East he completed a Masters Degree in Media Studies from the University of Leicester.
After successful careers as travel writers for guidebook companies such as Lonely Planet, Terence and Lara had settled on only writing manuscripts while based in the city or country where they had assignments. Most travel writers at this time only briefly visited the destination they were writing about unless they lived there. This not only gave Terence and Lara a better understanding of the destinations but afforded them to live ‘like locals’ as much as possible. This led to the next stage of their careers.
In 2010, Terence and Lara began a year-long travel experiment called Grantourismo Travels where they spent a year travelling the world and renting an apartment or house to learn about the local culture of each destination. Travelling slow, local and experientially has been the mission of Terence and Lara ever since.
After living in Bangkok, Hanoi and Hoi An, they currently live in scenic Siem Reap, Cambodia, which serves as a base for their magazine and newspaper assignments across Asia. Through Grantourismo Media, Terence and Lara have set up a full service agency for the hospitality industry with clients in Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos.
Terence’s work has appeared in magazines such as National Geographic Traveller, Australian Gourmet Traveller, ABC Delicious Magazine, Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia and DestinAsian Magazine.
